Danny Andrew has returned to Fleetwood Town for a third spell, re‑joining the Cod Army on the back of 195 appearances across his previous two stints. The 35‑year‑old left back has already helped the club keep three consecutive clean sheets in the opening three competitive fixtures of the campaign.
Andrew arrived back on the Fylde coast after three seasons in Sky Bet League One with Cambridge United, Stockport County and Exeter City. A pre‑season injury disrupted his preparations, but he has played in each of Fleetwood’s first three matches and is now focused on building his fitness further.
He said the return to Highbury feels like home, noting that the journey from Exeter to his Preston base used to take four and a half to five hours. “I love being here,” he added, “and it’s special to step onto the pitch again after all the time I’ve spent with the club.”
Fleetwood’s defensive record has given the team a solid platform. Andrew praised the three clean sheets, saying they “give the strikers a chance to nick a goal and then we can win games.” The club remains unbeaten in its first three matches and is looking to maintain that momentum.
The defender also highlighted the influence of the club’s captain, describing him as a leader who “makes a lot of sense” and whose presence in the dressing room is “massive” for a squad with many younger players.
Andrew reflected on the two victories that saw Fleetwood reach the second round, noting that the same opponents were defeated in both cup and league action. “We took the lead and then held on,” he said.
Looking ahead, Andrew sees the upcoming match against Shrewsbury Town as a demanding test. He said, “They’ll be big and strong, but we have to match that and then try to show our quality.” He added that a win would not only advance the club but could also bring a significant financial boost and increased exposure.
The defender urged supporters to stay behind the team throughout the season, stressing that fan support can “make a lot of noise” and help the club succeed.
Fleetwood will host Shrewsbury Town at Highbury on Tuesday evening in the second round of the Carabao Cup, with Andrew eager to continue the unbeaten run and keep the club’s defensive solidity intact.
