Celtic left‑back Adam Montgomery has agreed a season‑long loan move to Scottish Championship side Livingston for the second year in a row. The 24‑year‑old will wear the number 24 shirt for the Lions in the 2026/27 campaign.
A loan that started with promise
Montgomery, who joined Celtic’s academy at the age of six, made nine appearances for Livingston last season before a recurring calf injury forced Celtic to cut the loan short in January 2026. The injury, which mirrored a previous setback at Easter Road, ultimately ended his spell early and led to a recall by Celtic.
Returning to the West Lothian club
Livingston’s statement welcomed the defender back, noting that he had previously spent the first half of the 2025/26 campaign at the Home of the Set‑Fare Arena, making eight appearances before the injury. The club highlighted that Montgomery will now be a key part of Head Coach Glenn Whelan’s plans for the 2026/27 Championship campaign and will join fellow loanee Mitchell Robertson in the back line.
A career of loan spells
Montgomery’s move to Livingston marks the seventh loan in his career. Prior to this, he had short‑term spells at Aberdeen, St Johnstone, Fleetwood Town, Motherwell and Queen’s Park. Over six years at Celtic, the academy product has made 20 first‑team appearances.
Celtic’s support and gratitude
Livingston thanked Celtic for facilitating the deal and for the financial help when the loan was terminated last season. David Martindale, who was in charge of the Lions at the time, described Celtic’s decision to terminate the loan as a “touch of class” that freed up finances for the club to find alternative options. Martindale praised Celtic’s support during Montgomery’s rehabilitation and noted that the club’s willingness to terminate the agreement was a generous gesture.
Looking ahead
With full fitness restored, Montgomery is set to return to the Championship and aim for a regular spot in Livingston’s starting XI. The loan will run through the 2026/27 season, giving him another opportunity to build on his previous experience at the club and contribute to the Lions’ ambitions in the league.
