Fleetwood Town's Raff Cirino has been making waves with his impressive performance in the club's final home friendly of pre-season against Championship side Bolton Wanderers. The right-back produced an outstanding display at the heart of Town's defensive efforts, making several important interventions throughout the contest, including a superb last-ditch challenge to deny the visitors a clear opportunity in the first half.
Cirino has continued to progress through the club's pathway, signing his first professional contract in the summer of 2025 after joining Fleetwood Town's Academy at Under-15s level. The defender says the opportunity to test himself against higher-level opposition was a proud moment and a reminder of the progress he has made during his time with the club.
What happened?
Cirino's performance came against a Bolton side featuring several players with experience at a higher level, but the defender remained composed throughout and played his part in limiting the visitors' attacking threat. Having made his senior debut late last season, the youngster believes these opportunities are important as he looks to continue developing and competing for a place in Matt Lawlor's first-team squad.
Why it matters for Fleetwood Town
The 2026/27 pre-season campaign has provided opportunities for several members of Fleetwood's Under-21 group to step up and feature alongside the first team, and Cirino believes the pathway at the club is helping young players thrive. "It's been very good, especially for us Under-21s," he said. "We've had so many opportunities, and I feel like we've taken them. We've just got to make sure we keep taking those chances."
What comes next?
With competition for places increasing, Cirino knows he needs to keep improving and taking his chances. "I just need to keep improving my game and see what comes," he added. "The squad has opportunities for young players, so when we get those chances, we have to make sure we take them."
Cirino's versatility has been a key part of his development, with the defender able to operate both at right-back and right centre-back. "I feel like over the last few years I've been very versatile and added that to my game," he explained. "I've spent most of my time playing right centre-back, but whenever I get the opportunity to play right-back, I love it and want to take that chance."
