New signing ready for first home fixture
Fleetwood Town confirmed the signing of midfielder Andy Cannon on 20 August 2026. Cannon, who joined the Cod Army after a conversation with head coach Matt Lawlor, is fully fit and set to start in the club’s first home Sky Bet League Two match against Gillingham at Highbury on Saturday, with kickoff at 3pm.
Why Cannon chose Fleetwood
Cannon said the decision to join Fleetwood was driven by the chance to play in an attacking, passing and exciting team. “Speaking to the gaffer was a massive thing,” he told reporters. “As soon as I spoke to him and he explained the way he wants to play, everything aligned and it seemed like the right thing.” He will be deployed as a number eight, a role that fits his preferred midfield position.
A career of promotions and resilience
The 29‑year‑old midfielder left Wrexham after three successive promotions and a serious injury that kept him out for a year. He then spent the second half of the 2025‑26 season with Burton Albion, where he regained match sharpness and helped the club secure its place in League One. Cannon described his time at Burton as a period of careful management to rebuild fitness: “There were only a certain number of minutes I could play for the first few weeks… we achieved the aim, which was to stay in League One.”
Facing Chesterfield and future ambitions
Cannon admitted that Fleetwood did not dominate the ball in their two recent meetings with Chesterfield, but he remains confident in the squad’s identity. “We spoke in detail about how he wants to play with the role of the number eight,” he explained. “He wants to be an attacking team, a passing team and an exciting team.” He added that while Chesterfield are good on the ball, they will not face them every week.
Quiet ambition for a great season
Cannon stressed that individual goals will always be secondary to the club’s progress. “I feel good and I just want to have a really good season,” he said. “Obviously, I want a good personal season, but the main thing is always the club.” He hopes to build strong relationships with teammates and showcase his abilities in possession.
Gillingham clash at Highbury
Fleetwood Town welcome Gillingham to Highbury Stadium on Saturday. The match will be the Cod Army’s first home league fixture of the campaign, and Cannon’s presence is expected to add energy to the midfield as the team looks to establish a solid foundation for a successful season.
